Episode 2.21: Almagamated Brewing

This week we return to St. Louis to sit down with Mark Naski, head brewer for Amalgamated Brewing, which brews and distills for The Stable restaurant and bar. Naski takes a very traditional European approach to brewing, sticking to classic methods and ingredients. Next we head to the Lemp Mansion, former home of the Lemp brewing family, before shopping for antiques along Cherokee Row.

Episode 2.20: Morgan Street Brewery

In this episode of Travel by the Pint, we sit down with brewmaster Marc Gottfried and assistant James Hellmuth of St. Louis’ Morgan Street Brewery, which brews exclusively with lager yeast. Later we visit the historic Laclede’s Landing, the Mississippi riverfront, and Gateway Arch Park.

Episode 2.19: Prison Brews

Season 2, Episode 19

This week we stop in Jefferson City Missouri to chat with Prison Brews brewer Rod Dothage. In addition to their prison theme, Prison Brews boasts the only wood fired pizza oven in Jefferson City, and offers Bocce tournaments (pronounced BOW-chee in this region of the country). Later we take a hard hat tour of the former Missouri State Penitentiary where plans are underway to stabilize and install a museum in at least one of the structures that once comprised “the bloodiest 47 acres in America.”

Short’s recipe in BYO magazine

The May/June 2010 issue of Brew Your Own magazine (byo.com) includes a recipe from Joe Short of Short’s Brewing Company in Bellaire, Michigan. You may remember that Travel by the Pint featured Joe in Season 1, Episodes 3 and 4. The recipe is for The Magician Ale, described on the Short’s website as “A lustrous dark red London ale”.
